The latest development in minimally invasive technique for colorectal surgery is single-incision laparoscopic surgery. The technique involves elimination of the multiple incisions needed for conventional laparoscopic surgery. Instead, the camera and working instruments are all introduced through one tiny incision. While there are obvious cosmetic benefits with a single incision located either at the navel or as a C-section type scar which rests below the waistline, the risk of hernia or infection from the other sites are eliminated. While proving less pain has been difficult, we found that the percentage of patients who go home from the hospital without narcotic pain medications is significantly greater than conventional multi-port laparoscopic surgery.
