Pre/Post Operative Instructions
Postoperative Instructions after Rubber Band Ligation of Hemorrhoids

After your procedure of rubber band ligation of internal hemorrhoids you should go home and rest. You should avoid strenuous excercises.

Maintain a high fiber diet so that your bowel movements will be soft.

Take 1 teaspoon of Konsyl diluted with 8 ounces of water or juice twice a day, preferably at the time of the meals.

You may expect some pressure in the anal area, resembling the urge to have a bowel movement, for the first 1-2 days;  do not to sit on the toilet and strain, instead sit in the bath tub with warm water to soothe the area.

Do not to take any pain medication which contain aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, since they may cause bleeding.  It is okay to take Tylenol.

If you develop any of the following problems:
Fever” “increasing or excessive pain” “difficulty urinating”
after the procedure, contact my office immediately and go to the closest emergency room.

The rubber band will fall off spontaneously in 2-5 days; you will notice a small amount of bleeding at that time and for the next several days.  However if the bleeding becomes excessive or you start passing large blood clots, contact my office immediately and go to the closest emergency room.
